#22 Prestige World-Wide 2 - Anamatic

This is our anamatic video. We took these photos to give us an idea of what is going to be in our opening title sequence. The idea is that there there are many different shots but they start from a extream long shot of this mysterious building and then flash to other things that may take place in this place, but gradually the shots get closer to the building ending in a close up of it.

We want to use this piece of music because it is dramatic and builds suspense. We feel that we can work with this piece and place shots accordingly to build the opening of our film.

#19 Prestige World-Wide - Narrative Theories

These are the theories in film, and our film suits most to 'Propp's Theory'.
We have a:
Villain - Murdoch Monro (Evil Personality)
False Hero - Murdoch Monro (Innocent Personality)
Hero - Scott Parker

Goffman's Theory

  1. The protagonist (leading character)
  2. The deuteragonist (secondary character)
  3. The bit player (minor character whose specific background the audience is not aware of)
  4. The fool (a character that uses humor to convey messages)

Propp's Theory

  1. The villain (struggles against the hero)
  2. The donor (prepares the hero or gives the hero some magical object)
  3. The (magical) helper (helps the hero in the quest)
  4. The princess (person the hero marries, often sought for during the narrative)
  5. The false hero (perceived as good character in beginning but emerges as evil)
  6. The dispatcher (character who makes the lack known and sends the hero off)
  7. The hero [AKA victim/seeker/paladin/winner, reacts to the donor, weds the princess

Bartle's Theory

  1. Achievers (preferred to gain "points," levels, equipment and other concrete measurements of succeeding in a game)
  2. Explorers (preferred to be discovering areas, creating maps and learning about hidden places)
  3. Socializers (preferred to be interacting with other players, and on some occasions, computer-controlled characters with personality)
  4. Killers (preferred to depart from the norm of being "the good guy" who comes to save the day and play on the side of evil or conquest)

Campbell, Fletcher and Greenhill's Theory

  1. The Big Man (offer a form of order and stability to the community by absorbing many conflictual situations personally)
  2. The Sorcerer (will not engage in reciprocity with others in the community)
  3. The Trickster (generally a comical yet complex figure that is found in most of the world's culture)

Bishop's Theory

  1. Lurker - Driven by Surveillance forces. Lurkers make silent calls by accident, etc., clicking on adverts or ‘like’ buttons, using ’referrer spoofers’, modifying opinion polls or user kudos scores.
  2. Elder - Driven by Escapism forces. An Elder is an out bound member of the community, often engaging in “trolling for newbies”, where they wind up the newer members often without questioning from other members.
  3. Troll - Driven by Chaos forces. A Troll takes part in trolling to entertain others and bring some entertainment to an online community.
  4. Big Man - Driven by Order forces. A Big Man does trolling by posting something pleasing to others in order to support their world view.
  5. Flirt - Driven by Social forces. A Flirt takes part in trolling to help others be sociable, including through light ’teasing’.
  6. Snert - Driven by Anti-social forces. A Snert takes part in trolling to harm others for their own sick entertainment.
  7. MHBFY Jenny - Driven by Forgiveness forces. A MHBFY Jenny takes part in trolling to help people see the lighter side of life and to help others come to terms with their concerns.
  8. E-venger - Driven by Vengeance forces. An E-Venger does trolling in order to trip someone up so that their 'true colours' are revealed.
  9. Chat Room Bob - Driven by Existential forces. A chatroom bob takes part in trolling to gain the trust of others members in order to exploit them..
  10. Ripper - Driven by Thanatotic forces. A Ripper takes part in self-deprecating trolling in order to build a false sense of empathy from others.
  11. Wizard - Driven by Creativity forces. A Wizard does trolling through making up and sharing content that has humorous effect.
  12. Iconoclast - Driven by Destructive forces. An Iconoclast takes part in trolling to help others discover 'the truth', often by telling them things completely factual, but which may drive them into a state of consternation. They may post links to content that contradicts the worldview of their target.

#13 Prestige World-Wide 2 - Audience Research

The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo - This film’s opening title sequence was recommended because it is a very bizarre clip. The opening title sequence is based around the movement of ink. The whole clip is black with bright reflecting of the ink or the humans. The title sequence is filmed with lots of short clips and many close ups, it is also in slow motion. Throughout the first half of the clip, the ink is flowing into the humans. Half way through the clip a match gets lit, this match is the first colour apart from black that is shown and it burns the human. Once the silhouette is burnt, it then starts to move around and emerge from what is seemed to be like a river of ink. This is to represent that the ink has changed the people. There are then a lot of clips of the people getting punched and the face shatters from the punch, this shows that there is potentially action in the film to come. This is a strange opening sequence as it doesn’t tell the audience quite what is going on but as there are many different quick clips then it draws the audience in. The change in colour, going from black to red with the fire in the middle also is a massive change and draws you in. Many different things take place in the opening sequence and it kind of tells a small story but that is not really related to the film but the message of the story tells you that the ink from the tattoo changes people. James Bond – Skyfall - People like the opening sequence of this film because in the first scene, we see James Bond fall into water, and this automatically makes the audience ponder on what happens to him. We then see him being dragged under by a hand, and that makes us wonder what this represents and if the hand is supposed to represent him accepting death. He then sinks through a sand hole, which may have something to do with the title ‘Skyfall’. A target then appears of James Bond and blood seeps out. The audience like this because it represents action and it keeps the viewers interested. We then come across a graveyard, which symbolises death, and keeps the viewer interested because they want to know who from the previous Bond films is dead or going to die. Something that puts people off this particular title sequence is the length of it, and how it has many irrelevant images that do not relate to the rest of the film.

#12 Prestige World-Wide 2 - Mood Board

We have chosen the church and graveyard because they give a spooky presence. The black and white picture of the field with the mist also adds a spooky element. Many of these pictures are in black and white because it is meant be set in the 1950's and that is why there are men in the suits and hats. The knife and match is to represent the violent side of our theme.

#11 Prestige World-Wide 2 - 9 Key Shots from 'Dead Zone'(1983) Opening Title Sequence

In the 'Dead Zone' opening title sequence, we picked every second shot. From these 9 screen shots, it shows us that the 'Dead Zone' is set in the country-side of America.

Shot 1: The beginning of the title sequence opens with a house seen in screen shot 1. This is a mid-shot. This would automatically make the audience presume that this house is important and that something could potentially take place, for example, the protagonist's house or possibly where a death may take place as the title is 'Dead Zone'

Shot 2: This is a deep focus still, in the foreground, you can see clearly the barley, and in the background we can see unfocused trees and mist. The mist is there to create an eerie atmosphere.

Shot 3: This is a long shot of a countryside road with either sunset or dawn as you can see one side of the road is lighter than the other because of the sun. On our right side of the road it has sunshine on it and on our left side it has shadow possibly suggesting that one side is good and one is bad.

Shot 4: This is an Establishing Shot in the countryside on a small hill slope that is in a shadow, and the high trees have got sun shine on them so it is sunset or dawn. This could suggest that dark things could happen in dark places and maybe representing good and bad in the light and shadow. The shadows can foreshadow future events.

Shot 5: This shot is a mid-shot. Again this is on a dark road with the idea of corruption and destructive ideas.

Shot 6: This shot has a long view as the road and the trees make it look like a tunnel and an 'on-going' road, this could represent eternity of evil.

Shot 7: This shot is a title shot with the background saying 'Dead Zone' and the foreground saying the director of photography.

Shot 8: This is a shot of the title again saying 'Dead Zone' with the trees in the background of the words and then darkness on the boarders of the title.

Shot 9: This is a mid-shot of an elementary school. As it is the opening of the film without the title it would make the audience know that the story lies here.

Throughout this opening title sequence, there is a build-up of the letters spelling 'Dead Zone' with each shot there are more parts of the letters, this adds a dramatic effect that there is a build-up of letters which you figure out what it is saying throughout the opening title sequence

#10 Prestige World-Wide 2 - Analysis of Opening Title Sequence from 'Mission Impossible'

In this opening title sequence of the film ‘Mission Impossible’ it really draws you in and is very dramatic. It is a short sequence of 48 seconds. Throughout the title sequence most of the shots are close-ups and extreme close-ups, there is a rapid shot change as it changes every second or half second. This is a technique to draw you in as everything is changing so quickly and it keeps you watching. Before the titles appear there is a build-up of many different rapid shot changes and then the title appears. When the titles appear there is a black background with in big font there is luminous white letters coming across saying ‘TOM CRUISE’ as the protagonist is ‘Tom Cruise’, these letters come in the background and come horizontally across the screen from right to left very fast. Whilst this is happening, in the foreground there is still writing saying ‘Tom Cruise’. This is not just done with the protagonist, it is done as in the foreground it says ‘Paramount Pictures Present’ and in the background it comes across saying ‘Paramount’. In this sequence, to show intensity and possibly suspense, it will show the character in a close-up shot, and then it will quickly change to the next shot of an extreme close-up, this draws the audience in and it does this almost every time you see the main characters in the opening sequence. The director will have a camera shot of the actor or actress and have it in normal colour, but then will change it to a luminous colour, this changes the mood and atmosphere of the title sequence as by lots of colour change it keeps you watching and interested. The director has started the title sequence with a match being lit and then put onto some dynamite, by having this as the opening clip; it tells the audience that there will be an element of action. What the director does is keep coming back to that burning piece of rope every few seconds of the title sequence; he also ends with the end of the rope being burnt and then an explosion, and then the final title ‘Mission Impossible’. This shows you that time is running out and there will be action and suspense. The costumes used in the title sequence is smart potential CIA costumes or field agents as the actors are wearing suits and it makes them look important. The lighting fluctuates between light and dark as there are bright lights as the rope is being burnt and things are blowing up and then usually dark scenes. Dark scenes with dark lighting are there to show that bad things can be done in dark places and there is potentially going to be something there that they cannot see. In the title sequence, there are sound effects as you can hear the lit fuse and the sizzling of the rope being burned, this shows time is running out and adds the extra effect with the noise instead of just seeing it. This lit fuse and sizzling takes place right at the beginning of the title sequence and it builds up the atmosphere until you get into the famous soundtrack of ‘Mission Impossible’. The soundtrack is very memorable as it is a very fast, it gives a thrilling feel and a feel of action.

#8 Prestige World-Wide 2 - Traits of a Thriller Film

Ghost thriller traits

1.       Elements of drama and mystery

2.       The suspense in the sub-genre comes from the mind.

3.       The protagonist must rely on  their mental resources to solve the situation

4.       They use action to create suspense

5.       Often have continuous motion and action e.g. stunts, chases, fights

6.       These scenes will contribute to the overall sense of danger the protagonist is facing

#6 - Prestige World Wide 2 - Choosing a Film Brief

We decided to chose a 'Ghost Story Thriler' because it includes action, drama, mystery and the paranormal. We did this because it gives us a wide range of ideas to produce for our final piece. It allows us to encorporate many of our ideas we  have found in similar trailers.

As we live in a country-side boarding school with a large amount of space, we have decided to use this oppourtunity to create the opening sequence of a film by using all the space we have. We are going to use the building Gordonstoun House as the creepy house that the film revolves around and the scenery that helps create the thriller theme.

#5 Prestige World Wide 2 - Jelly Baby Task

The Jelly Baby task was to make the first five scenes in a 'ghost story thriller.' The shots are still photos put together in a short sequence. In the shots we used lego to create a backgound (graveyard), tissues to cover the jelly babys so that they appeared to be ghosts, and jelly babies as our characters.

1. In the first scene, the family of the lately deceased are visiting the dead in the local graveyard. The gargoyle sculptures are placed up high, perched on pillars to represent that they are the guardians of the grave. They are also used to create an eerie atmosphere.

2. In the second scene, it shows the two family members weeping whilst walking away. The wall is blocking the view of the ghosts of the grave, lerking around, possibably looking for an attack...

3. In the thrid scene the family turn the corner to find a surprise, ghosts!

4. In the forth scene, we see that the ghosts have beheaded one of the family members in a brutal attack. The other family member is still alive at this point, but the other ghost is blocking his facial expression, preparing to murder the second visiting family members.

5. In the fith scene, we now see four bodies in the graves, instead of two. The bodies have changed from a red to yellow colour to represent the loss of blood, and turning pale. The gargoyles have now leaped down from the pillars to observe the newly dead added to their grave. The gargoyles moving down from the original position brings a theme of darkness and sorrcery to the story. The ghosts have now moved above the dead bodies looking over them to represent authority and that the dead are imortal.
